What are Xeomin Injections, and How Are They Different?

Wrinkles are frustrating. Whether part of the natural aging process, the result of chronic sun exposure, or merely from smiling or frowning with frequency, facial lines and wrinkles seem inescapable. While we may not avoid wrinkles entirely, there are several things we can do to minimize their visibility.
What is Xeomin?
Xeomin, like Botox, is an injection used to temporarily relax muscles at the injection site. Approved by the FDA in 2010, Xeomin injections produce similar results to Botox. Xeomin injections are derived from the botulinum toxin type A.
What is Xeomin Used For?
Like other similar injectables, Xeomin is used to address dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form due to repetitive facial movements such as frowning or smiling. Common areas where Xeomin injections are helpful include:
Forehead lines
Lines around the eyes (“crow’s feet”)
Lines between the eyebrows ("worry lines" or "frown lines," glabellar lines).
Xeomin injections have also received FDA approval for treating upper limb spasms, cervical dystonia (painful contractions of the neck muscles), and blepharospasm (uncontrollable eyelid blinking).
How Many Units of Xeomin Do You Need?
Xeomin doses are measured in units. Your provider at Clique Salon and Med Spa will work with you to determine how many units you will need for each treatment session. However, there are a few basic guidelines they follow. Each treatment location requires a different number of units. For example:
Horizontal lines on the forehead generally require between 20 and 40 units.
Lines and wrinkles around the eyes or “crow’s feet” require between 5 and 20 units.
Glabellar lines or the lines between your eyebrows require between 15 and 30 units.
The exact number of units you need will depend on several factors, including the strength of the muscles in the treatment area and the condition of your skin.
What are the 5 Main Benefits of Xeomin?
Xeomin shares many similar benefits with Botox yet has advantages when Botox does not.
Xeomin works when Botox won’t-Botox injections contain added proteins where Xeomin does not. It is not uncommon for the body to develop a resistance to these proteins, and therefore the effects of Botox are reduced. In these cases where Botox fails, Xeomin helps to achieve desired results.
Works quickly and without pain- most people see results from Xeomin treatments within the first 72 hours. The final results of your session are generally visible within three to four weeks. Depending on how many areas you treat in a single session, you can expect to be in and out of the office within 10-20 minutes! There is no downtime or extended recovery with Xeomin, so you can make a lunchtime appointment and return to work after. Also, Xeomin treatments are minimally invasive, often so much so that many patients do not require an anesthetic, although topical (applied to the skin) options are available if you choose.
Xeomin prevents future wrinkles-Although treatment of existing wrinkles is often the primary reason people seek injectable treatments, it is not the only benefit of Xeomin. This particular treatment can limit future wrinkle formation as well. Xeomin injections encourage the skin to produce extra collagen- the protein responsible for keeping your skin smooth and tight. The added collagen in the treatment area can help prevent wrinkle formation for several months.
No risk of nasty side effects- Xeomin injections benefit wrinkle reduction without the risk of unpleasant and undesirable side effects. Most patients experience little to no post-treatment discomfort, bruising, or swelling. Also, there are few risks associated with Xeomin treatments.
Xeomin Injections do not affect your muscles' range of motion-many injectables have a bad reputation of "freezing" the muscles in the treatment area. Although Xeomin treatments do prevent overactivity or hyperactivity of the muscles in the treatment areas, your facial muscles are still capable of motion and producing expression. The primary difference is that your smiles, frowns, or other facial expressions are not working to deepen the folds, lines, and wrinkles on your face.
How Much is Xeomin?
Several factors determine the cost of Xeomin injections. On average, Xeomin injections cost around $400-$425 per session. However, it is important to remember that several sessions may be required. Also, it is necessary to return every six months for follow-up sessions to maintain the best results. Is Xeomin Better Than Botox?
Both Xeomin and Botox work to smooth the skin and reduce the presence of lines and wrinkles. Although they both are similar in effectiveness, some studies suggest Xeomin produces quicker, longer-lasting results.
Which Lasts Longer Xeomin or Botox
On average, Botox injections last approximately three months, although some report longer-lasting results. Xeomin results generally last for up to six months in most cases.
